Readers Theater for Grades 4-5
In this class, students will read a variety of works that try to see the world through an animal's eyes. They'll use their new perspective to write, rehearse, and perform their own readers' theater. Each day of class includes lessons designed around the core components of reading, writing, vocabulary, and public speaking. Throughout the day, students engage with several different texts through deep, independent reading and guided analysis. The class features one longer work that students read both in class and at home, and multiple shorter pieces that we close-read together in class. Each day also features interactive games and public speaking exercises, including class discussion and debate, readers theater, and competitive team activities.
In the first week, students will read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, the classic Newbery Medal winner by Richard C. O'Brien. They will also begin to learn advanced literary skills that will help them write their scripts, including how to pitch their stories and format their writing.
In the second week, students will read The One and Only Ivan, the 2013 Newbery Medal winner by K. A. Applegate. Throughout the week, they will revise and polish their scripts and prepare for their readers theater performances on the final day of class.
This two-week course meets Monday through Friday for three hours each day. It is designed for students entering grade 5.
Space is very limited for our summer programs. Please do not wait until the last minute to enroll. If there is more than a week before the course starts, a $200 deposit will be due when enrolling, with the balance due one week before the course begins.
